Christmas Home Decor Ideas 🎄

Holiday Season is finally here! It’s my favourite time of year, and so much fun (and stress) decorating your home and preparing your Christmas Living Room for Christmas Day. I’ve put together some of my top tips to help you create the perfect Christmas vibe for your home so that you can celebrate the holiday season in style with your loved ones.

1. Fake a White Christmas

Christmas in Australia is never white, we’re lucky enough to be blessed with a warm summer Christmas, however, this can mean that we miss the beauty that we see everywhere that comes with a white Christmas. Don’t let this stop you from creating the prettiest white Christmas in your home! Frosted Christmas trees are easy to find and can elevate your home decor. Pair your snowy tree with gold Christmas decorations or white Christmas decorations and neutral toned baubles and accessories for a real luxurious look. A white rug like our Byron Ivory rug also adds to the glam!

2. Keep it cozy and neutral

Scandi and minimalist design are where we could all draw some inspiration from this Christmas. A neutral palette can be decorated with a pop of colour, keep accents in line with Christmas colours - pair neutral palettes such as beige/cream, white and brown tones with red or green accents. Or keep your whole theme neutral and add textured accents like tinsel or glitter covered Christmas baubles - elegant but simple!

These Cone Tree lights from Adairs are one of my favourites at the moment!

3. Declutter before decorating

If you know me, you know my favourite saying - “less is more!” and when it comes to Christmas decorating, it’s not different. You may have hundreds of decorations but you don’t need to have them all out. Take what you have out of storage, plan your theme and then pick your decor accordingly. Take this time to also clear out any decorations that you know won’t be used again - any broken items, outdated items or things that you just don’t absolutely love anymore - get rid of them! Stick with the pieces that mean something to you, that have sentimental value and that are timeless - this way you can never go wrong!

I am currently loving these gnomes from Pillow Talk - timeless, neutral and elegant. They can be used time and time again and will not go out of style.

4. It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas!

Candles are classic and can add that extra bit of coziness to your home over the holidays. While artificial candles can work, there is nothing that compares to real candlelight (where safe to do so). Put out the candles you already own and add some extras, and make sure they’re all lit up! One of my Christmas favourites is the Glasshouse Night Before Christmas found here.

Coloured rugs for living room. Find the perfect living room rug and bedroom rug

How do I pick the right coloured rug?

A rug can transform your entire space. The beauty of a rug is that it can completely change up your home, from a bedroom rug, living room rug or dining room rug. From the right colours to the right textures, the rug can be your feature when you walk into the room or the piece that can help tie everything together. To help you with picking the perfect rug, we have put these tips together.

1. Take a look at the lights and shadows in your room

Each room is unique in its natural lighting and this can make a big difference in how the colours of your rug appear. If your room doesn’t get much or any natural light, you’ll want to avoid dark coloured rugs such as black rugs, charcoal rugs or navy blue rugs. They can make the space look darker and smaller. One the other hand, rooms with lots of light (natural or artificial!) have the luxury of darker coloured rugs as well as lighter coloured rugs such as beige rugs and cream rugs.

2. What else is in the room?

Before buying your new rug, have a look at the colour scheme and the decor in your room. What other colours are in the room? The carpet, the tiles, the walls? Your furniture and artwork need to also be taken into account as they can change how your floor rug will look. Do you want to match your rug to your lounge or to your artwork? Or get a rug that's the complete opposite?

Thinking about all of these will help you decide whether you want a statement feature rug, or a simpler rug that helps tie everything together.

3. Be true to yourself!

Your home is a reflection of you! Your interior decor should showcase homewares that you love and that represent you.
If you are someone who loves understated and simpler interiors, we recommend our Byron or Loren wool rugs - the perfect luxurious rug to help tie all the elements of your home together.
If a feature rug is more your style, our multicolour rugs are perfect for this. Featuring all kinds of colours from pink rugs and blue rugs to boho rugs and traditional oriental rugs.

White Wool Rug in Bedroom

How to find your perfect Bedroom Rug

Picking out the perfect size rug for your bedroom doesn’t need to be complicated (even though it can feel overwhelming!). Not only does a bedroom rug transform the way your bedroom looks, it also adds warmth and comfort to the space- who wants to step on a cold floor first thing in the morning when getting out of bed?! The right rug will help tie everything together and help define the space - especially in larger, open spaces. We put together these tips to help you find your perfect bedroom rug.

1. The Bigger the Better!

When it comes to bedroom rugs, the bigger the better! A small rug will make the space look smaller and can make the furniture in your room look too big for the space.

To find the perfect rug for your space, the best way to start is by measuring your bed. Ideally, you want around 30cm to 45cm on the sides of the bed so that you can stand on it when getting out of bed.

For example, the smallest rug for a King size bed would be the 240x330cm size whereas a queen size bed would need a 200x290cm sized rug as a minimum. The placement of the rug does depend on the size of your bedroom, you can place the rug at the head of the bed or start it halfway down so that you get lots of rug at the bottom of the bed - it is entirely up to you!

2. Materials and Patterns are super important!

Texture is super important when it comes to bedrooms as you want as much warmth and comfort as possible. Bedrooms are low traffic areas and so any material works! Soft, plush shaggy rugs that would be too much for other rooms of your home are perfect for the bedroom. Luxe wool rugs that might not be able to withstand the heavy traffic in areas such as the living room or as dining room rugs, are also perfect in bedrooms!

When it comes to patterns - anything goes! Keep in mind that the bed will be covering up a lot of the rug so patterns may get lost - so anything with a medallion in the centre such as oriental rugs or Persian rugs, may lose it’s wow factor.

3. Don’t let a budget stop you from finding the one!

If you know that you want a rug for your bedroom, but don’t have the budget to get a big rug, don’t stress! A runner rug can make just much of an impact. Place a runner on the sides of the bed or at the foot of the bed. They can even be layered on top of another rug for a chic, boho look.
